The Dental Bridge Process

Replacing your tooth after it is lost prevents many problems in the future. Fortunately, modern dentistry allows easy access to tooth replacement options, including the dental bridge. Acquiring this appliance is simple enough, typically requiring only two appointments to complete your smile and get you back on track.

The first appointment

After selecting the ideal type of dental bridge (traditional, Maryland, implant-supported, or cantilever), the first appointment involves preparing the teeth and placing a temporary bridge. At the start, the dentist will administer a local anesthetic to ensure the patient feels no pain. However, they will still be alert and can drive home after the appointment.

Next, the dentist will reshape the abutment teeth (the neighboring teeth of the gap) by removing a small portion of their enamel. Reshaping is necessary to accommodate the dental crowns holding the dental bridge.

The dentist will then take impressions of the patient's new oral state. The impressions will serve as a model for the custom bridge fabrication. Lastly, the dentist will place a temporary bridge to ensure the patient feels no pain or discomfort, nor can they damage their newly vulnerable abutment teeth. This temporary bridge also enables normal oral function while the dental bridge is fabricated.

Bridge fabrication

Immediately after capturing the impressions, the dentist will send them to an off-site lab where technicians will craft the patient's custom bridge. The dental bridge will match the color, shape, and size of the patient's natural teeth, ensuring a flawless and natural-appearing fit. The entire process will take approximately two weeks. Unless the patient is undergoing additional work unrelated to the dental bridge, they will not return for their second appointment until the dentist receives the dental bridge in-office.

The second appointment

During the second and likely final appointment, the dentist will remove the patient's temporary crown before testing the fit and alignment of the custom crown. If necessary, the dentist can make small adjustments to ensure optimal comfort and functionality. This may require the patient to perform certain bite tests to ensure comfortability. Once the patient and dentist are satisfied, the dentist will permanently cement the bridge to abutment teeth.

No anesthetic is required unless the dentist adjusts the patient's abutment teeth. To finish the appointment, the dentist will review best care practices to ensure the dental bridge can last between five and 15 years.

Caring for the dental bridge

Care tips and longevity can vary depending on each patient's lifestyle, dental bridge type, and location. However, a good foundation for care includes:

• Brushing twice a day
• Use a floss threader at least once daily
• Use an alcohol-free mouth rinse

Patients should also maintain their biannual checkup appointments; that way, the dentist can ensure the dental bridge maintains its quality and fit, making adjustments as necessary.
