Cerec Q&A

What is CEREC?

Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) is a technological device that simplifies restorative dentistry and makes it more efficient. It uses computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) to design restorations based on your anatomy and mills those restorations from high-quality blocks of ceramic using a short-wave blue light.

In a single office visit, the CEREC system can create:

  • Crowns
  • Veneers
  • Onlays
  • Inlays

As long as you’re in good health and need a dental restoration on the list above, you’re likely a good candidate for CEREC treatments. Your dentist might recommend other treatments if fixing your issue involves a process with no need for a custom ceramic restoration, like a dental filling.

What should I expect during the CEREC treatment process?

During your single CEREC appointment, the team at Dental Oasis of Orange County starts by preparing the tooth in need of repair. They numb the area first, then shave the tooth down to make room for the crown, if you need one. Then, they use a gliding camera to scan the tooth and take detailed 3D images.

After putting the images into the computer-aided design system, your dentist can create a refined restoration that fits perfectly over the prepared tooth in the image. They make sure the shade of the ceramic block is the same as that of your natural teeth, then the machine uses diamond-head cutters to cut the ceramic into a tooth shape within 15 minutes.

Fresh from the machine, your restoration is ready to go. Your dentist double checks the fit before bonding it to the prepared tooth. It remains there permanently until it wears down or breaks and you need a replacement.

What are the benefits of same-day CEREC crowns?

CEREC technology has made dental procedures like getting crowns, inlays, onlays, or veneers much quicker than before. During your initial treatment consultation, the team at Dental Oasis of Orange County explains the benefits of using CEREC to make your restorations. They include:

  • Durable, long-lasting restorations
  • Complete treatment in a single appointment
  • No need for temporary restorations
  • Very precise shaping for your restorations
  • Comfortable digital impressions (as opposed to a mold)
  • Biocompatible ceramic materials

CEREC restorations have an 85-95% success rate, making them a reliable option for nearly anyone who’s a candidate. The technology is constantly improving and evolving, and the Dental Oasis of Orange County team prides itself on providing the latest updates to you.
